[PIO] The poet Elena Toumazi (Rebelina) passed away

The Deputy Ministry of Culture expresses its deepest sorrow for the death of the important Cypriot poet, Elena Toumazi (Rebelina). Elena Toumazi, through her important legacy for the country, conversed with classic works of world literature and was among the first Cypriots to write literature from a female perspective.

Elena Toumazi was born in 1947. She grew up in Famagusta and graduated from the Famagusta Girls' High School in 1965. Subsequently, she studied psychology in Geneva, specializing in child psychology. In 1972 she published her first book of poetry entitled: The Little Mole and the Sun. She worked in radio and television.

She published six works of poetry and one prose work. Her poetic work Erhou was awarded the State Poetry Prize (Afis Publications) in 2011.

The loss of Elena Toumazi is great for the literature and intellectual life of Cyprus.

The Ministry of State expresses its sincere condolences to her family and loved ones.
