The new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Ambassador Andreas Ignatiou, presented on Wednesday, 4 October 2023, his credentials to the Secretary General of the Organization, Ms Helga Schmid.

In a private meeting with the Secretary General, Mr Ignatius expressed his full support for the work carried out by the OSCE, despite the unprecedented challenges it faces due to geopolitical developments. In this context, the Permanent Representative of Cyprus stressed that the OSCE and multilateralism must be preserved, not at the expense of our values, but by preserving them and building on them. He expressed confidence that the rules-based international order and commitment to our fundamental values will prevail.

Mr Ignatiou and Ms Schmid exchanged views and agreed to be in close communication in relation to Cyprus' assumption of the Chairmanship of the Forum for Security Cooperation in January 2024. The Forum, which Ambassador Ignatiou will chair for the period January - April 2024, is, together with the Permanent Council, one of the two autonomous decision-making bodies of the OSCE and meets on a weekly basis, addressing a wide range of issues of a political-military nature. Cyprus, as the next chairing country of the Forum, already participates, together with Canada (current chairmanship) and Bulgaria (outgoing chairmanship), in the Forum's troika.
