On the occasion of the International Women's Day, the Pancyprian Movement Equal Rights - Equal Responsibilities organized an event on "Women's Rights: Then and Now" at which the title of Honorary Member was awarded to the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mrs. Stefi Drakou.

The Minister was initially a member and then Vice-President of the Movement's Council. Taking the floor from the President of the Movement Ms Koula Koumidou, she thanked both the new Council for awarding the title and the members of the then Councils who worked together to achieve the goals of the Movement.

In her speech, the Minister stressed the rapid progress that has been made at all levels of society compared to the standards of the time. But she also sent a clear message. We are not stopping here.

Instead, the Minister said that we have a long way to go to change the attitudes that stand in the way of full equality. Something that requires time, perseverance and continuous effort.

This is why, through the Ministry's Equality Unit and the National Mechanism for Women's Rights, there are special Sponsorship Schemes aimed at encouraging community groups, such as the Pancyprian Equal Rights Equal Responsibilities Movement, to carry out actions and campaigns for equality.

Finally, the Minister assured that she has placed equality issues very high on her priorities and will continue to work methodically to create an equal and just society.
