Health Minister Dr Poppy Kanari today chaired the first meeting of the working group set up to develop a National Strategy for Mental Health.
Through the Strategic Plan, actions will be promoted for the prevention of mental illnesses, for systematic information, enlightenment and public awareness on mental health issues, while the creation of new structures for the therapeutic management of people with mental illnesses will be promoted.
In order to achieve this goal and setting the development of a National Strategy for Mental Health as a priority, the Ministry of Health submitted a request for cooperation to the World Health Organization, in the context of the establishment of its office in Cyprus. The need for technical assistance focuses mainly on providing expertise for the development of the national strategy but also on the adoption of best practices applied in other countries.
Already, two teleconferences have been held with representatives of the World Health Organization and on 13-14 December, a delegation of the Organization will visit Cyprus where it will hold meetings on issues related to mental health policy development.
