The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MESY) welcomes the passage by the House of Representatives of the legislation for the gradual extension of free compulsory pre-primary education from the age of 4 years.
Yesterday's approval by the House of Representatives resolves another long-standing issue that has plagued the public sphere. This legislation is also a requirement of the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The effort of the Christodoulides Administration to modernise our country and upgrade our education system is continuous and uninterrupted.
The passage of the legislation is a very positive development, as its implementation will have multiple benefits for both children and their families, such as ensuring quality education from the age of 4, reconciling family and work life and facilitating the integration or reintegration of parents/guardians into the labour market. At the same time, the full utilization of funds from the Recovery and Resilience Fund is also achieved.
It is noted that with the implementation of the legislation in the next school year, it is expected that approximately 1500 children aged 4 years and 6 months to 4 years and 8 months will be enrolled in public and community kindergartens during the next school year, while gradually until the 2031-2032 school year, children from 4 years of age will be admitted to pre-primary education.
The Ministry of Social Welfare would like to thank the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare for its support in this project, our partners PDOED and organized parents, as well as the Members of Parliament for their cooperation.
