The progress of the implementation of projects of the Department of Antiquities in the communities of Fterikoudi, Lagoudera and Nikitari was inspected today by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Mr. Yannis Karousos, accompanied by the Director General of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works and the Director of the Department of Antiquities.
More specifically, Mr. Karousos visited the site of the Monument of the Old School in Fterikoudi, where maintenance and restoration works are being carried out. In particular, accessibility and drainage works are being carried out, while a new electrical and electromechanical study is being carried out in order to proceed with the installation of the infrastructure. The cost of the works for the restoration of the Monument amounts to €207,000.
In addition, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works visited the Church of Our Lady of Araka in the Community of Lagoudera. The Monument is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and is considered one of the most important Byzantine churches in Cyprus. In the area of the Monument, construction works are underway to address the moisture problems of the western wing of the cells, detachment of the road from the wing of the cells, creation of new retaining walls and landscaping of the area. The project is being implemented with funding from the Department of Antiquities (€100,000), on the basis of a study by the Municipality of Morphos and approval by the Departments of Antiquities and Public Works. In addition, the addition of sanitary facilities for visitors is being considered, at an additional cost of approximately €90,000.
During his visit to the Monument of the Church of Our Lady of Assinou, Mr. Karousos had the opportunity to tour the site and inspect the completed project of creating a visitor centre and sanitary facilities. The project has been handed over to the Metropolis of Morphou and its completion had a total cost of €303,000. The Church of Our Lady of Assinou is a Monument included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and contains some of the best Byzantine frescoes in the country from the 12th-17th century.
Finally, it should be noted that all three monuments are included in the List of Ancient Monuments B' of the Department of Antiquities.
