The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mrs Stefi Drakou, is leaving today, March 2, for Brussels, where she will participate in the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the European Union. The meeting, which takes place in the shadow of military and political developments in Ukraine, will take place on 3 and 4 March.

In the context of the Council's work, Ministers are expected to follow up on the discussions held during last month's Informal Council on the political governance of the Schengen area. In particular, they will exchange views on the Presidency's proposal to establish a special composition of the Schengen Council, in which issues relating to challenges and problems that arise can be discussed directly.

At the same time, they will discuss the proposal to introduce the institution of a European Schengen Coordinator and the creation of a solidarity platform to ensure an appropriate European response to crises at the external borders. Furthermore, the Ministers of the Member States will discuss issues relating more broadly to the safeguarding and promotion of the rule of law, with an emphasis on the means needed to protect the legal profession.

In this context, they will exchange views on the scope for establishing a common set of rules for the legal profession, as an essential element in ensuring the proper functioning of justice in the European Union.

The meeting is also expected to discuss, inter alia, draft conclusions on the fight against racism and anti-Semitism and cooperation with Latin American countries in the fight against drug trafficking.

In addition, the PPD Minister will hold a meeting with her Irish counterpart to discuss issues of common interest.

Finally, Ministers will discuss the implications of developments in Ukraine in the field of Justice in relation to wider cooperation with Russia.
