Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou is leaving for Brussels today, where tomorrow he will participate in the work of the Internal Affairs Council of the European Union.
During the meeting, the 27 ministers responsible for migration issues will review the actions taken so far at national and European level to enhance the effectiveness of the return of rejected asylum seekers to their countries of origin. In the context of the discussion, Mr Ioannou will reiterate the need to further promote returns, as they are a central pillar of the migration management strategy, especially for frontline Member States such as Cyprus.
The Cypriot Interior Minister will again convey to his counterparts the importance of taking coordinated actions at European level to strengthen the field of returns, with emphasis on promoting cooperation between the Union and third countries, in the framework of the Action Plan for Eastern Europe. It is recalled that, through a series of targeted and well thought-out measures implemented in recent months at national level, Cyprus has achieved a 60% increase in removals compared to 2022, and ranks among the top EU countries in absolute numbers of returns.
In relation to the external dimension of migration, the Council will be concerned with the effort to put in place a mechanism and procedures to promote legal migration, in the context of creating a talent pool, with the aim of curbing illegal flows and opening up new legal channels.
The Minister of Interior returns to Cyprus on Wednesday, 6 December 2023.
