The importance of cooperation for the preservation and promotion of public health was highlighted by Minister of Health Mr. Michael Damianos, who opened this morning the 10th Ministerial Meeting of the Small States Initiative (SCI) of the European Region of the World Health Organization (WHO), which is hosted by our country in Limassol between 11-12 April.

"By pooling our expertise and resources, we can effectively address the challenges in the health sector," Damianos said in his address.

The Minister of Health expressed his gratitude to his counterparts and to each individual delegate for their dedication, passion and unwavering commitment to strengthening the health sector and their efforts for the well-being of their countries. "Let us seize this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people in our countries," he added.

As Mr Damianos explained, the discussion will focus on cancer issues and in particular on Population Screening Programmes, paediatric cancer and the impact of climate change on the health sector.

In his welcome address, the Regional Director of the World Health Organization, Hans Henri Kluge, warmly thanked Cyprus for organizing the meeting, which he said is taking place at a time of great challenges but unlimited opportunities for the health sector. All countries, regardless of size or wealth, can benefit from the expertise and support of either other countries or the WHO. Over the last four years I have seen the Regional Office for Europe become an office that works consistently and effectively to serve all 53 member countries," said Mr Kluge.

For her part, the European Union Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Ms Stella Kyriakidou, stressed that the common goal is to strengthen health systems and provide a high level of treatment and care for every citizen, wherever they live.

"These guiding principles form the basis of a strong European Health Union", she said.
