Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry George Papanastasiou participated in the 14th Session of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), which is taking place in Abu Dhabi between 16 and 18 April.

Specifically, within the framework of the Summit, Mr. Papanastasiou took part in the High-Level Plenary Session on Tripling of Renewable Energy Sources (High-Level Plenary Session on Tripling of Renewables). In his intervention, the Minister highlighted, among other things, the fact that Cyprus has shown one of the largest increases in the share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) among EU Member States in the last two years.

He also announced the initiative of Cyprus, which currently holds the Presidency of the EU MED9 Group, to host the next Ministerial Meeting of Ministers responsible for energy issues on 30 September 2024. In cooperation with the European Commission, IRENA and stakeholders, the objective of the Ministerial Summit will be to explore the potential for the Mediterranean region to become a hub for the transfer of green energy between EU Member States and third countries.

Mr. Papanastasiou also participated in two Ministerial Round Table discussions on, firstly, Geopolitical and Energy Security and, secondly, Infrastructures necessary to achieve the Energy Transition. In his interventions, which were made in the presence of EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson and his Director General Francesco La Camera, the Minister highlighted the important geographical role that the Republic of Cyprus can play in the region as an energy transmission centre through electricity interconnections and other energy infrastructure. He also stressed the importance of interconnections and how they can increase the penetration of Renewable Sources, reduce the cost of electricity and enhance the security of energy supply, while he also referred to the technical difficulties encountered in the effort to develop large electrical interconnection projects, such as the Great Sea Interconnector.

During the session, Mr. Papanastasiou visited the World Future Energy Summit exhibition and held a series of meetings, including with senior executives of ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) and the Israeli Minister of Energy.
