The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Ms Athena Michaelidou, visited today, together with the First Lady Mrs.
In the context of her visit, Mrs. Michailidou, in her statements to journalists, said: "On the occasion of the start of the school year we are here, with the First Lady, at the Kindergarten of Lakatameia V "St. John Chrysostomos", to see the work being done at the kindergarten, to greet the children, but mainly to wish them a good school year.
We are happy to see the staff caring for the children and we have seen happy children. It is very important to us that Preschool Education is given the importance it deserves. It is the foundation of all levels of education and, as part of the Governance Programme as well, we have announced programmes specifically for Early Childhood Education this year, and we are very pleased about that.
We have already started training programmes for pre-school teachers and we have included actions for early intervention, so as to reduce the problems at other levels as well," the Education Minister concluded.
Then, in response to a journalist's question regarding the main problems that have been identified and how she intends to address them, Michailidou said: "We have not seen any particular pedagogical issues in any of the grades. We are starting the year quite smoothly this year, small issues that arise, either because of vandalism in some schools or because of the air conditioners we are being asked to install, are issues that we have planned for, are aware of and are slowly resolving them with a specific goal and schedule."
