The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Ms Athena Michaelidou, visited today the Pedagogical Institute, where seminars are held for the training of teachers.
In the context of her visit, the Minister in her statements to journalists said: "Today we had the opportunity to visit classrooms at the Pedagogical Institute where seminars are held, as part of the seminar for the teacher's weekend in primary education.
We have groups of teachers here who are being trained on key issues, such as modern technologies as a tool in teaching, diversity issues, etc. These are topics related to teaching and learning in the context of our new plans for student assessment. More generally, it is an opportunity for our teachers to update, update and upgrade their knowledge and practices in order to win the bet on the transition to the modern school. In what we are striving for, in the most student-centered approaches, giving our children opportunities to cultivate competencies, skills and gain the knowledge necessary to be the active citizens of the future."
The Minister then answered questions from reporters.
Asked if the Ministry is ready for the start of the school year, the Education Minister replied, "On the key issues of infrastructure, books, staffing, new programmes in general, we are ready. There and wherever any problems arise we have the mechanisms to cope. I think that the year starts with good omens."
Asked whether, based on the latest developments - the incidents in Limassol and Chloraka - there is a plan by the Ministry of Education to give anti-racist messages and messages against intolerance to students, Ms. Michaelidou noted: "We want to have the calm in our schools so that we can act, so that we can develop children's creative thinking, so that our teachers can work. We will not tolerate violence, delinquency, racism in our schools, so our actions are focused on supporting our principals, management teams and teachers so that they can devote themselves to their work. School is a place of mutual respect, it is a place of respect for diversity. It is a place in which every child, every pupil, every student, has and should have the right to develop his or her abilities and skills to the fullest."
