The Minister of Defence, Mr Michael Yiorgallas, paid an official visit to Jordan from 18 to 20 September 2023, at the invitation of the Chief of the Jordanian Armed Forces, General Youssef Al Hunaity.
The Minister's visit comes within the framework of regular bilateral consultations on defence and security issues with states in the region and follows the President's visit to Amman last August.
During the meeting with the Chief of the Jordanian Armed Forces, General Youssef Al Hunaity, the bilateral defence cooperation between Cyprus and Jordan was reviewed and ways to further strengthen and deepen it were discussed, with the conduct of training and joint exercises of special forces and aviation in Jordan and Cyprus.
Yiorgallas was also received by the Prime Minister of the country, Mr. Bisher Al-Khasawneh, with whom they discussed issues of bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries. The Minister thanked Mr. Al-Khasawneh for Jordan's immediate response and assistance with the dispatch of aerial firefighting assets to extinguish the recent fires in Cyprus.
Yiorgallas and Al-Khasawneh agreed to further strengthen the already good relations and military cooperation developed in recent years between Cyprus and Jordan.
The Minister also had the opportunity to meet with His Eminence Archbishop Christophoros of Kyriakopolis, with whom they discussed ways of strengthening the pastoral work of the Orthodox Church in Jordan.
Mr. Yiorgallas also visited the King Abdullah II Special Operations Training Centre (KASOTC) where he was briefed and given a tour of its training facilities. During the visit, issues of cooperation between the centre and the National Guard for providing training to its personnel were discussed.
