Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Dr Maria Panayiotou will travel to Brussels tomorrow to participate in the EU Council of Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers. The Council will discuss the need for a rapid and at the same time structural response to the current crisis in the agricultural sector. In particular, there will be an exchange of views on short-term measures that can be taken by member states at national level to reduce administrative costs for farmers in implementing the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and other EU legislation, as well as on medium- and long-term actions to simplify the CAP and legislation.

Other actions that can be taken on the basis of farmers' demands, within the possibilities of the financial framework and without jeopardising the overall objectives of the Green Deal, will also be discussed.

The Council will also address the issues of biosecurity and vaccination as essential tools for the prevention, control and eradication of animal diseases. Finally, particular attention will be paid to the unilateral fisheries management measures taken by the United Kingdom.
