The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr Maria Panayiotou, left for Vienna today, where she will represent the Minister of Defence at the Security Dialogue on Environment and Security that will take place, on 21 February, at a joint meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Forum for Security Co-operation (FSC).
The joint OSCE Forum-Permanent Council meeting, to be held in the presence of the Secretary General of the Organisation, Ms Helga Schmid, aims to explore the evolving role of military forces in responding to natural and man-made disasters and to examine ways to reduce the impact of military activities, including conflict, on the environment and climate change.
Within the framework of the Forum, the Cyprus Presidency has scheduled four Security Dialogue meetings to discuss and highlight the priorities it has set, such as promoting demining and gender mainstreaming in the implementation of the Organization's civil-military commitments.
In the Dialogue on Environment and Security, Participating States will discuss issues such as how the armed forces are responding to the growing number of disasters by expanding their capabilities with humanitarian assistance and search and rescue operations, how the military is adopting more environmentally friendly practices in terms of managing gas emissions and environmental pollution and degradation, how to integrate climate concerns into national security and defence strategies, and how the The Forum, together with the OSCE Permanent Council, are the two autonomous decision-making bodies of the Organization.
