Following the approval of favourable arrangements for farmers by the European Parliament, Cyprus promotes the simplification of the CAP and support for farmers in the food supply

Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Dr Maria Panayiotou is travelling today, 28 April 2024, to Luxembourg to participate in the European Union (EU) Council of Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers and to chair the 2nd meeting of EUMED-9, aimed at promoting proposals for simplifying the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and strengthening the position of farmers in the food supply.

Adoption of favourable arrangements by the European Parliament following a proposal by the previous Council of Agriculture Ministers, which adopted Cyprus' proposals

It is recalled that the Minister, Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, in cooperation with the Farmers' Movement, during the previous Council of Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers on 26 March 2024, tabled proposals for amendments to the CAP regulations, which were eventually adopted by the Council. The amendments tabled by Dr Panagiotou were aimed at further increasing production and ensuring additional agricultural income, particularly in the vulnerable sectors of Cypriot agriculture, and are considered beneficial for farmers operating in our mountainous areas.

The European Parliament, in turn, approved on 24 April 2024 the amendment of key CAP regulations, based on the proposal of the Council of Ministers, which is a positive step for Cyprus and EU farmers, as favourable provisions are introduced for them.

The new Regulation, which will be published in the Official Journal of the EU in the coming days and will have retroactive effect from the 1st of the year, institutionalises the request made by the Ministers of Agriculture of the EU Member States to reduce the administrative burden for farmers receiving CAP payments, in a way that achieves both the enhancement of the economic viability of farms and, at the same time, the high environmental ambition of the CAP.

Agriculture and Fisheries Council and EUMED-9 in Luxembourg

At the upcoming EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council of Ministers, which will take place on Monday, 29 April 2024, Member State ministers are expected to continue the discussion on the response to the agricultural crisis. The Council will focus on measures to simplify the CAP and strengthen the position of farmers in the food supply chain. Furthermore, the EU's trade agreements with third countries and their impact on the competitiveness of European agriculture are also expected to be discussed.

Prior to the opening of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Luxembourg, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, in the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Euro-Mediterranean Agreement of the 9 EU Member States (MED9), will convene the second consecutive meeting of the Ministers of the Mediterranean Member States, which will aim to coordinate and find the appropriate tools to promote positions that will strengthen their common demands on agricultural issues.

Dr Panagiotou returns to Cyprus on Good Tuesday morning, 30 April 2024.
