The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Costas Kadis, is leaving tonight for Nairobi, Kenya, where he will represent the President of the Republic at the Special Session "UNEP@50" of the United Nations Environment Assembly. The overall theme of "UNEP@50" is the strengthening of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in relation to the implementation of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Among the objectives of the Summit is the preparation of the United Nations General Assembly on the Environment (Stockholm, 2-3 June 2022), where the 50th anniversary of the creation of UNEP will be celebrated. UNEP was created in 1972 to play a leading role in environmental protection, setting the global environmental agenda, encouraging cooperation among states and promoting coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development.

During his stay in Nairobi, Mr. Minister will hold bilateral meetings, as well as a private meeting with His Eminence Bishop Makarios, Metropolitan of Nairobi and Archbishop of Kenya.
