The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr Maria Panayiotou, left today, Thursday 1 February, for Thessaloniki, to attend the opening ceremony of the 30th International Exhibition of Agricultural Machinery, Equipment and Supplies "Agrotica 2024", at the invitation of the Greek Minister of Rural Development and Food, Mr.
This afternoon the Minister will address the opening ceremony of the exhibition. During her visit to the exhibition, Dr Panagiotou will have the opportunity to learn about new technologies that could be applied in Cypriot agriculture, aiming at the exploitation of agricultural technology. The main objective is to increase the contribution of the primary sector to the Gross Domestic Product, as stated in the governance programme.
On the sidelines of the exhibition, the Minister will have a meeting with the Maltese Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, Dr. Panagiotis. Anton Refalo to exchange views on the common problems they face in the primary sector, and to find common solutions.
On Friday, 2 February, the Minister will participate as a speaker at the conference organised alongside the Exhibition, under the auspices of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, entitled "1st Agrofuture Summit: Opportunities, Challenges and New Data". In her speech, the Minister will present the Strategic Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy 2023-2027 as a key tool for achieving the Ministry's vision for the future of Cypriot agriculture, taking into account the environmental challenges facing the agricultural sector.
During her visit, Dr Panagiotou will also attend a working breakfast with her Greek counterpart where the further strengthening of cooperation between the two Ministries will be discussed.
As part of her visit, the Minister will also sign the renewal of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki for the provision of scientific support to the Ministry on issues within its competence. The objectives of the cooperation are, inter alia, the exchange of scientific information, the preparation of research projects of common interest, the preparation of training programmes for the staff of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the organisation of seminars and conferences. It is also stressed that strengthening cooperation with universities is a priority of the governance programme.
The Minister will return to Cyprus on Friday afternoon.
