"We maintain our position that there must be a removal of the illegalities and restoration of any environmental damage that may have been caused," said Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Dr Maria Panayiotou, after the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment.

The Parliamentary Committee today discussed the issue of the construction and erection of a temple in a "Natura" area in Cape Greco and the possible environmental impact, in the presence of relevant government agencies, local authorities and environmental organisations.

In her statements after the session, the Minister recalled that the complaint had been submitted to her, which she had immediately forwarded to the Environment Department for appropriate action.

"The Environment Department, on March 19, acted immediately with on-site visits and written information, both to the owners and to the relevant agencies and local authorities, requesting the need to stop the works and remove the illegality," the Minister noted.

This was followed, Dr Panagiotou added, by "several site visits by nature teams to record the damage and confirm the termination of the works."

On March 29, she continued, "following the demolition enforcement notice sent by the Planning Department, the Environment Department requested demolition plans, which due to the hierarchical appeal made by the Metropolis, these have not yet been submitted."

"But regardless of the outcome of the hierarchical appeal, we will issue the demolition conditions at a meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee," which he said is scheduled early next week.

"We stand by our position that there must be a removal of the illegalities and restoration of any environmental damage that may have been caused," the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment concluded her remarks.
