Meeting with the Rapporteur of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Mr. Piero Fassino on the issue "Call for the return of Famagusta to its legal inhabitants"

The legal aspect of the Famagusta issue and the consequences of the illegal opening of part of the enclosed town of Varosha by Turkey was discussed today by the Attorney General of the Republic Mr.

The General Prosecutor of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Giorgos Savvidis, informed the Rapporteur of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on the issue "Call for the return of Famagusta to its legal inhabitants", Italian MP Mr. Piero Fassino.

Mr. Fassino is visiting Cyprus as part of his mission as Rapporteur of the PACE's Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy on the issue of Famagusta, on which he will prepare a report.

The meeting, which took place in the morning at the Office of the Prosecutor General and lasted about one and a half hours, was also attended by the Secretary of the CSTO's Political Affairs and Democracy Committee Mr. Pavel Chevchenko, the team of lawyers of the Legal Service handling the legal aspect of the Famagusta issue and relevant officials of the House of Representatives.

During the discussion, Mr. Savvides stressed the importance of Mr Fassino's visit to Cyprus and the timing of his visit, since its purpose is to record the illegal actions of Turkey in the occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus and in particular, in the enclosed town of Varosha.

Mr Savvides explained to his interlocutor the legal aspect of the issue and the consequences of the illegal opening of Varosha. He pointed out the clear violation of the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions on Cyprus, as well as the violation of the property rights of the legal residents of Famagusta. He also referred to the case law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which over time has demonstrated Turkey's continuous violations of international law and human rights. In this context, Mr. Savvidis explained the Republic's positions on the role of the so-called "Property Commission" operating in the occupied territories regarding the properties of Greek Cypriots in Varosha. He also pointed out the ineffectiveness of this "Commission".

Mr.Savvidis said that, despite the international outcry, Turkey continues its illegal actions in Cyprus, culminating in the latest developments in the enclosed city of Famagusta in violation of the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.

For his part, Mr.Fassino thanked Mr. Mr. Savvidis thanked Mr. Fassino for his detailed and precise statement, which was followed by a discussion following clarifying questions by Mr. Fassino.

Mr. Savvidis wished that Mr. Fassino's Report would be adopted by the Council of Europe. Fassino's report will be another step towards the realization of the just demand of the people of Famagusta to return to the city of their ancestors as soon as possible.
