The Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Ms Marilena Evangelou, and the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ms Ylva Johansson, discussed today issues related to migration and within the competence of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare.
After the meeting, Ms Evangellou said that it was a productive meeting during which she thanked Ms Johansson for all the assistance that the European Union (EU) provides to Cyprus, putting on the agenda the extension of the relocation programme for unaccompanied minors, which is currently being promoted on a pilot basis to a limited number of children.
As Ms Evangelou said, the European Commissioner has responded positively to the proposal and will take the request forward.
Furthermore, the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare informed the Commissioner for Internal Affairs about the acceleration of procedures, especially with regard to the procedures for the fostering of children, usually to families of their fellow nationals, as well as about the efforts made by the Deputy Ministry in cooperation with the Asylum Service and the International Organization for Migration of Cyprus to accelerate the process of activating the Dublin Regulation for the reunification of children with their families in European countries.
Ms Johansson was also informed by Ms Evangelou about the promotion by the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare of the payment of Reception Materials through a prepaid card, so that there is greater and more effective control of benefits.
