In his statement, the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. Yiannis Panayiotou, said the following:

"The historic building of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance encompasses multiple symbolisms: historical, political, social and architectural.

We preserve the identity and ensure the continuity of the first government building of the Republic of Cyprus, and meet our responsibility for the continuous development and upgrading of the structures, infrastructure, procedures and services of our state.

The history of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance includes social achievements, which are benchmarks for Cypriot citizens for guaranteed labour rights, regulated labour relations and a sustainable pension system.

We manage our history with respect and look to the future with optimism for the development of the economy and the cohesion of society, in cooperation with our social partners, employers and employees."

Panagiotou also thanked Mr. Vafedis for the close cooperation between the two Ministries and expressed his thanks to the ETEK for its guidance and support regarding the preservation of the identity and continued operation of the historic building of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance.

The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Vafeadis referred to the architectural value of the building and the next steps to be taken, noting the importance of the timelessness of the design challenges and stressing the importance of preserving the identity of the historic building through the process being put in place.

Specifically, Mr. Vafeadis stated: "Just as we had to deal with some climate change issues in 1960, we have to deal with the same issues today. That is why we welcome the Minister of Labour's decision to proceed in this way, because we are giving the opportunity through collaboration to young architects to work in this building. The aim is to show how we today can manage these problems effectively and make this building a model. This collaboration, this coexistence and the preservation of the old building with whatever new will emerge will guide future generations."

Finally, Mr. Andreas Papallas, Architect Member of the General Council of the ETEK, presented the provisions and parameters of the architectural competition of ideas, which will be completed on 17 September 2024, and expressed his appreciation to the two Ministries for their commitment to respecting the historical architectural heritage in the context of the decisions taken for the future of the building of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
