The House of Representatives commemorates the 20th anniversary of Cyprus' accession to the European Union (EU) with the organization of a special plenary session of the House and a related conference on Friday 10 May 2024, which, at the invitation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Anita Demetriou, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta Dr Angelo Farrugia, the First Vice President of the Greek Parliament Mr Ioannis Plakiotakis, the Vice President of the Lithuanian Parliament Mr Ioannis Plakiotakis, and the Speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament Mrs. Anita Demetriou. Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė and the Vice-President of the National Assembly of Slovenia, Mr Danijel Krivec, speeches will be made by the Speaker of Parliament, Mrs Anita Demetriou, the Heads or Representatives of the parliamentary parties and independent Members of Parliament. The session will be held in the presence of the President of the Republic Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, state officials, Cypriot MEPs, the EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Ms. Stella Kyriakidou, the Member of the European Court of Auditors Mr. Lefteris Christoforou, Cypriot judges in EU and other international judicial bodies, as well as the diplomatic corps.
This will be followed at 11.30 a.m. by a celebratory conference on the anniversary of EU accession, which will take place in the "Evi Gavriilides" hall of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC). The event will be addressed by the President of the European Parliament Mrs Roberta Metsola in a video message, the First Vice-President of the Greek Parliament Mr Ioannis Plakiotakis and the EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Mrs Stella Kyriakidou. This will be followed by a round table discussion on "Collective achievements, common challenges and future course as EU Member States - the role of parliaments", with the participation of the President of the Parliament, Mrs. Demetriou, the Speaker of the Maltese Parliament Dr Angelo Farrugia and the Vice-Presidents of the Parliaments of Greece, Lithuania and Slovenia Mr Plakiotakis, Mr Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė and Mr Krivec, respectively.
The opening ceremony will be accompanied by the Youth Symphony Orchestra, while visual material on the 20th anniversary of Cyprus' accession to the EU will be shown. The conference will conclude with an award ceremony for students of high schools and technical schools in an essay writing competition on the same topic, announced by the Parliament.
As part of their visit to Cyprus, the President's distinguished guests will be guided along the ceasefire line accompanied by the Speaker of Parliament and will sign the Parliament's visitors' book: HoR Cyprus - YouTube
