The Government Spokesman, Mr.Konstantinos Letibiotis, answered questions from journalists during his media briefing at the Presidential Palace today.

In response to a question regarding a meeting held yesterday at the Legal Service on the issue of the usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories, the Spokesman said: "The Government is closely monitoring developments in the occupied territories in relation to the usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties.

Effective legal measures that can act as a deterrent to such actions are being sought and considered. A meeting was indeed held yesterday at the Legal Service in the presence of the Foreign Minister, the ways in which this arrangement can be made are being studied and as soon as decisions are taken they will be announced."

To another question he said: "Encouraging our compatriots not to leave, not to release their properties in the occupied territories is something different from what we are discussing."

He also said that information is constantly being collected about what is happening in the occupied territories in relation to usurpation and specifically about legal and natural persons involved.

"It is an issue that we are closely and constantly monitoring," he pointed out.

Asked about the appointment of an envoy for the Cyprus issue by the United Nations (UN) Secretary General (SG), the Spokesman said that the official announcement of the appointment by the UN Secretary General is expected, adding: "Once that announcement comes, you understand that it will also contain the date of assumption of office of the person who will be deployed. Our information and following the consent of the other side is that this will be done in the very near future."

Asked about the issue of the staffing of the Cyprus Group, the Spokesman said: "At the last National Council, the President of the Republic asked the political leaders to propose names. Some political forces have done so and some have not. What the President of the Republic will seek is to receive suggestions from the political forces, which he will evaluate before making the final decision."

Asked if there will be a change in the persons who make up the Technical Committees on Cyprus, the Spokesman said: "What the President of the Republic has announced - the establishment of a Cyprus Group - [IS THAT] possibly their staffing will be considered, but at the moment what comes first with the beginning of 2024 is the Cyprus Group."

Asked in relation to the issue of establishing a maritime humanitarian aid corridor in Gaza, the Spokesman said: "We have drawn up a very concrete, detailed plan for the implementation of this initiative. All that remains at the moment is the green light from Israel. Once we get the green light, the initiative is ready to be implemented. The statements of the Foreign Ministers of Cyprus and Israel during the recent visit of the Foreign Minister of Israel to Cyprus are relevant."

Asked to comment on a report that a Sudanese man who runs a Cyprus-based company is funding Hamas, the Spokesman said: "We are in contact to verify this information, it is something that is in our attention and we are also investigating it."
