The First Cultural Cooperation Agreement between Greece and Cyprus was signed yesterday by the Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou and the Minister of Culture of the Hellenic Republic Dr. Lina Mendoni.

This Agreement between Greece and Cyprus on Culture is a continuation of the systematic cooperation between the Ministries of Culture of the two countries, as a result of the work of the 1st High Council of Cooperation between Greece and Cyprus under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President Nikos Christodoulides, which took place in Athens last November. The Agreement replaces the Memoranda of Cooperation of previous years and reflects the new directions and content of cultural cooperation, which is expanding in the fields of cultural heritage and contemporary culture.

The Agreement provides for the exchange of good practices concerning the organization of archaeological museums, with emphasis on the construction of the new Archaeological Museum in Nicosia, as well as the organization and exchange of temporary exhibitions.

The Agreement provides for the exchange of good practices concerning the organization of archaeological museums, with emphasis on the construction of the new Archaeological Museum in Nicosia, as well as the organization and exchange of temporary exhibitions.

Subsequently, the bilateral meeting of the delegations of the Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Culture of Greece confirmed the unbreakable ties, the close, fruitful and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in the field of culture.

It was noted that a lot of extremely important work has been done in Greece in recent years in the context of the digital transformation of the Ministry of Culture, with the creation of the Archaeological Cadastre, the Mobile Monuments Portal, the Historical Archive of Excavations and Restorations and their respective Integrated Information Systems, with substantial results in serving citizens, the educational and investment community. In this context, it was agreed to transfer know-how on the respective issues to Cyprus, while an expert mission is planned for 2024.

It was further agreed to exchange know-how through the Organisation for the Management and Development of Cultural Resources (OADAP) in the design and organisation of kiosks and saleable items at archaeological sites and museums in Cyprus, as well as in the training of Cypriot students in the copy production workshops of OADAP, and their participation in the programmes of the IEK Ekmagias, which is scheduled to open immediately.

A mutual objective, within the framework of the Agreement, is the support of productions, co-productions and participation of theatre groups in festivals and educational programmes with the aim of regular presence of Cyprus in all major festivals in Greece.

The political will of the two sides to strengthen traditional and contemporary crafts through the exchange of know-how and good practices, the strengthening of craftsmen and designers, the organisation of educational programmes and the overall creation of strategic programmes for the restoration and development of crafts in the two countries, which have a long and important tradition in the genre, was also confirmed.

In addition, it was agreed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries within the framework of international organisations, particularly UNESCO, given Greece's great experience in the preparation of candidature files, for the benefit of the Cypriot ones.

Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening cooperation in the field of protection of cultural goods from illicit trafficking, with both countries taking the initiative to create a network with other Mediterranean countries, with which Greece and Cyprus have excellent cultural cooperation. The Government of Greece has acted vigorously and with full determination in its efforts to combat all illicit trafficking, having taken a number of measures against looting and theft of cultural goods at legislative, administrative and executive levels within the country and to seek coordinated international action in this area.
