An audit of a total of 1,000 leasing contracts of Turkish Cypriot premises used for commercial purposes was carried out until the end of November, as part of the evaluation of the existing contracts and the proper observance of their terms. The audits, carried out by an internal audit team set up on the instructions of the Minister of Interior, concern contracts for premises in all districts. The audits revealed violation of the terms of the contract in 98 cases, for which the procedure for recovery from the Turkish Cypriot Property Management Service has been initiated, while further investigation will be carried out for another 105.

At the same time, the Ministry of Interior is implementing a series of measures aimed at resolving specific cases of Turkish Cypriot property management. In this context, the Ministry of Interior has revoked a licence to exploit[/B] Turkish Cypriot property (agricultural clergy) in Paphos District, after it was found that the property in question, while being used by a refugee beneficiary for agricultural purposes, was wrongly approved for a concession to serve another development by a non-refugee. Following a new decision by the Custodian of Turkish Cypriot Properties, the property in question was recovered and the licence will be reassigned to the original beneficiary in order to redress the injustice done to him.

It is recalled that in order to institutionalize procedures and introduce mechanisms for meritocratic and sound management of Turkish Cypriot properties, with instructions from the Minister of Interior, the available Turkish Cypriot properties will be published on the website of the Turkish Cypriot Property Management Service, through which all interested refugees will be able to claim them on the basis of common criteria. The decision to allocate a property will be made after evaluation of the applications by a competent Committee, in order to ensure equality in the use of Turkish Cypriot properties.
