The Director General of the Directorate General (DG) for Environment, Dr Kostas Hadjipanagiotou, represented the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr Maria Panayiotou, at the Ministerial Meeting on Climate and Resilience for 2050, which took place yesterday in Brussels.

The main topic discussed at the Ministerial Meeting was the European Union's climate target for 2040, on the occasion of the European Commission's Communication (06/02/2024), which launches the dialogue for agreement on the 2040 target. Based on the impact assessment and recommendations of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change (ESABCC), the European Commission recommends a 90% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. The legal proposal setting the climate target for 2040 will be the responsibility of the next mandate of the European Commission, following the European elections and the discussions and dialogue that will take place in the coming months.

In the context of the debate, the Director-General made a preliminary comment on the process with emphasis on the socio-economic aspects and the need for a structured dialogue with all stakeholders. He underlined that the Union's challenge is not limited to maintaining and increasing ambition, but also to the lessons to be learned from the experience already accumulated at technical as well as at procedural level from the implementation of the existing policy. Dr. Hadjipanagiotou described as of paramount importance the specificities of Member States in the effort to set the new 2040 target and noted that the effort should be accompanied by appropriate technical and financial support.
