The Deputy Ministry of Tourism and the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Association are organising the Pancyprian Conference entitled "Is climate change a threat to tourism?", which will take place at the Filoxenia Conference Centre on 19 October 2023. The Conference is under the auspices of the President of the Republic Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, who will address the conference.

Speakers at the Conference will be experts from Cyprus and abroad, with significant research work and experience in the complex issue of adaptation to climate change, which includes the tourism industry.

The Conference is addressed to tourism industry stakeholders in order to raise awareness of climate change, which is causing radical changes in the tourism model, as well as to governmental bodies dealing with sustainability and climate change issues. The use of the experience gained through research projects and practices applied internationally will contribute substantially to the development of actions by entrepreneurs in the tourism sector to mitigate the effects of climate change. The Conference will serve as a platform for exchanging ideas and developing synergies with specific objectives.

The Sustainability Manager of TUI, a giant in the tourism sector, will present TUI's response to climate change, so that the industry can understand the new data and requirements created for travel in a radically changing tourism model.

Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Change from a representative of the Travel Foundation with 20 years of experience in implementing projects to ensure sustainability in tourism.

The Conference could not achieve its objectives without the presentation by the relevant government agencies of the Government's multi-dimensional Action Plan to address the impacts of climate change. This Plan is necessary to support the tourism industry through the planning and implementation of specific projects and actions.

The Conference will conclude with a round table discussion with the participation of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Mr. Petros Xenophontos, the Deputy Minister of Tourism Mr. Kostas Koumis, the Commissioner for the Environment Ms. Maria Panayiotou, the Presidents of the Hotel Business Associations PASYXE and STEC and the President of the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Association. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Phoebe Kountouri, Professor at the Athens University of Economics and Business and the Technical University of Denmark.
