The Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Ms Marilena Evangelou participated on 18 January 2024 in the Belgian Presidency's Ministerial Conference in Brussels on "Investing in an inclusive and fair future for Europe - Minimum Guaranteed Income: Towards a safety net for all".

The Conference discussed the perspectives, but also the challenges at European level, regarding the design and implementation of an effective and adequate Minimum Guaranteed Income (MGA).

The Deputy Minister had the opportunity to inform her counterparts about the achievement of the Modernisation and Upgrading of the EEE in Cyprus, making the EEE faster, more efficient and fairer with a noticeable reduction in the average time for processing applications of 75%, strengthening the Control Team to immediately terminate the benefit when fraud or attempt to defraud the system is detected and strengthening the Social Intervention Mechanism for the integration and inclusion of all VET beneficiaries in society by integrating them into the labour market, or into education and training programmes, or into psychosocial support programmes.

During the Conference, particular emphasis was placed on the third axis, as the disengagement from benefit and the integration of beneficiaries into society as a whole is a priority at European level.

The importance that the Ministry of Social Welfare attaches to the integration of beneficiaries into society as a whole through the Social Intervention Mechanism, which is already in operation, was underlined.

Views were also expressed on the role that the European Commission can play in strengthening the EES, the philosophy of which is not only to provide benefits, but above all to tackle social exclusion and isolation. In addition, good practices were exchanged both for efficient internal management using technology and digitised procedures, and for better and faster service to citizens.
