The Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou participated yesterday, at the invitation of the Minister of Culture and Sports of the Hellenic Republic, Dr. Lina Mendoni, the celebrations for the inscription of Zagori on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which took place in Vitsa Epirus in the presence of the Greek Prime Minister, the President of the Hellenic Parliament and many other state and local officials.
Also present at the celebrations were the Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Mr. Lazare Eloundou and the Director of its Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Mr. Boris Erg. The Deputy Minister congratulated her counterpart and the entire team from the Ministry of Culture, the Permanent Delegation of Greece to UNESCO, the Region of Epirus and the Municipality of Zagori, who through a concerted and coordinated effort succeeded in inscribing the Cultural Landscape of Zagori on the UNESCO World Heritage List. He specifically mentioned the following: "It is of great importance that, for the first time, a cultural landscape of Greece is inscribed on this List, thus highlighting the importance of the more recent cultural heritage in the shaping of Greek Culture, alongside the ancient one. Through the recognition by UNESCO of the outstanding and universal value of the traditional architecture of Zagorochoria, as a unique example of the survival and preservation of Byzantine and Ottoman elements, the criteria are set to ensure the protection of the authenticity and integrity of this most important cultural landscape. He also noted that this recognition will contribute to sustainable development, based on the universal values of the tangible and intangible heritage that Zagori has preserved over the centuries.
The presence of a representative of the Cypriot Government at such an important ceremony confirms the close historical, brotherly ties of Cyprus with Greece and Greek Culture. It is an outgrowth of the fruitful discussions between the Deputy Minister and the Minister of Culture of Greece in the framework of the Cyprus - Greece High Cooperation Council, where, among other things, they agreed to encourage actions and initiatives related to cooperation within the institutional framework of the European Union, the Council of Europe, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and other international organizations.
