The approval of the draft law on urban reforestation was decided at today's meeting of the Council of Ministers, following a proposal presented by Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou. The bill aims to establish and operate a mechanism and procedure for the consolidation, management and redistribution of real estate within a development area, with a view to its urban activation. At the same time, it enables rational and economic urban planning of areas within development zones.

The objectives of the bill are, inter alia, the following:

[*]creation and supply of land ready for development, [*]reorganisation of property within development areas, [*]rational zoning of large-scale uses in the Urban Redevelopment Plan area, and [*]rehabilitation and activation of areas after natural or man-made disasters. [BR]

Urban rezoning achieves a reduction in scattered development and the need for individual housing outside development boundaries, at the same time that it is expected to resolve a number of problems for landowners who cannot develop their parcels, either because they are enclosed or because they involve multiple properties on the same parcel or because there are economic burdens on the parcel. In addition, urban rezoning contributes to solving environmental issues, addressing the effects of climate change, limiting urban sprawl, meeting housing needs and increasing the supply of land in dimensions, shape and size according to the intended use.
