[PIO] The cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and the "Union of Cyprus Communities" for the promotion of culture in the Cypriot countryside

Aiming to promote culture and tradition and support cultural activities in the mountains and the Cypriot countryside, the Deputy Ministry of Culture, in cooperation with the Union of Cyprus Communities, has undertaken a series of initiatives aimed at developing cultural activities and promoting quality cultural events.

The provincial meetings were held following the meeting between the Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou and the President of the "Union of Cyprus Communities" Mr. Andreas Kitromilides, during which it was decided to strengthen the cooperation between the Ministry of State and the Union, but also to provide support to the Communities in order to use culture to attract visitors to the mountains and rural areas, cultural education, as well as the promotion of intangible culture and tradition of the place.

In this context, a series of provincial meetings were held in the previous days.

In the province of Nicosia the meeting was held in Arediou, in the province of Limassol in Spitali, in the province of Larnaca in Skarinou and in the city of Paphos, where representatives from about 150 communities participated.

During the meetings, representatives of the Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Department of Contemporary Culture presented to the representatives of the Communities the various sponsorship programs of the Deputy Ministry, which can be used by the Communities for the organization of cultural activities and events, such as film screenings and workshops.

The issue of community libraries was also discussed, and the Ministry of State expressed its readiness to further support their operation and to organise, together with the communities, literacy activities for young people and children as well as for adults. At the same time, needs were recorded, as well as suggestions for the further promotion of cultural events and activities in the countryside.

In the context of the briefing, the activities of the Monuments Commission and the application procedure for the construction of monuments were presented.

The series of information meetings, which is the first of many joint actions, marks the beginning of a closer cooperation and communication that the Deputy Ministry of Culture seeks to develop with the Communities, which are cradles of culture, but also the bodies for the preservation of local customs and traditions.
