The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Mr. Harris Georgiades, participated today in the work of the Meeting of the Chairmen of the European Affairs Committees of the Mediterranean Member States of the European Union (EU), which is being held in Crete.

In his intervention during the discussion on EU enlargement, Mr Georgiades said that enlargement is a key political tool which contributes, among other things, to the geopolitical stability of the EU's wider neighbourhood. He stressed that it is important that all candidate countries meet the accession criteria, but also that the EU takes supportive measures to assist them in their accession process. Georgiades pointed out that these cannot be based on Ankara's denigration of European institutions and values and that it is imperative to develop a credible common EU policy on Turkey that includes clear red lines.
