The work of the Meeting of the Chairs of the European Affairs Committees of the Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC), which took place in the framework of the current Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), concluded yesterday in Namur, Belgium. The House of Representatives was represented by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Mr. Harris Georgiades.
In his intervention during the discussion on EU enlargement, Mr. Georgiades said that despite the disadvantages of the EU, the Union remains the most successful example of a union of democratic states. It will be a huge achievement, he pointed out, if the Union is completed through enlargement to countries that wish to join, provided, however, that democracy and the fundamental principles and values of the EU remain the backbone of enlargement and its external relations. There can be no compromise, he stressed, when it comes to relations with illiberal, undemocratic and authoritarian regimes. There can be no compromise with Putin's aggression or fanatical Islamist terrorism in the Middle East, or with other regimes that claim to be partners of the Union, but in fact are heading towards authoritarianism, without any respect for their neighbours or their people. During the meeting, the Cyprus problem, migration and the situation in the Middle East were discussed. Mr Georgiades informed about the Turkish provocations at sea and along the ceasefire line and highlighted the difficulties faced by the Republic of Cyprus on the issue of illegal migration, while inviting the French delegation to visit Cyprus.
