The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and head of the delegation of the House of Representatives to the Interparliamentary Dialogue "3+1", Mr. Charis Georgiades, participated in the 2nd Eastern Mediterranean and South-Eastern Europe Conference, organised by the Delphi Forum, in Brussels, on 12 October 2023.

Mr Georgiades participated as a speaker in a discussion on the ways in which the cooperation mechanism between Greece, Cyprus, Israel and the USA ("3+1") can work for the benefit of the Eastern Mediterranean region. The panel of speakers also included Mr. Tasos Hadjivassiliou MP, member of the Greek Parliament's delegation to the "3+1" IGC, and Mr. Geoffrey Pyatt, US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources.

Georgiades said that the "3+1" cooperation mechanism is a cooperation between four democracies that share the same values, respect and defend the international legal order and promote peaceful coexistence. The need for cooperation between these democracies, Georgiades stressed, is becoming urgent as the values they embrace are under attack, particularly in the Middle East, by Hamas. Therefore, Georgiades noted, the security and defence sector, and in this context the defence of sovereignty, territorial integrity, democracy and human rights should be priority areas of the "3+1" cooperation mechanism. Georgiades pointed out that the potential participation of Turkey in this partnership, as well as its commitment to its European course, would be beneficial primarily for the Republic of Cyprus, provided that it would result in the alignment of this country with the principles and values of the European Union and the respect of its neighbouring states. He explained, however, that at this stage Turkey's policies are such that this prospect is distant.

In the framework of the Conference, the President of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs also spoke at a working dinner on recent developments in the Middle East. Georgiades expressed his full solidarity and support to the State of Israel for the attack carried out by Hamas against Israeli citizens and underlined Israel's right to defend itself. In this regard, Georgiades stressed the importance of the Abraham Accords in normalizing Israel's relations with Arab countries and the need for this project to have the support of all actors in the region.
