The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Mr. Harris Georgiades, had a meeting today with a delegation of the Chicago Council on World Affairs, led by its CEO Mr. Ivo H. Daalder. The delegation includes the Executive Director of the Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC), Mr. Eddie Zemenides.
Welcoming the delegation, Mr. Georgiades noted the significant upgrading of relations between the US and Cyprus and underlined the strategic role of Cyprus as a pillar of security and stability in a highly volatile region. At such a critical juncture, Georgiades said, the presence of the US in the region is necessary to curb the spread of extremism.
Responding to questions from members of the delegation, Georgiades reviewed the progress of Cyprus' economy and the country's successful recovery after the financial crisis. He noted that Cyprus' comparative advantages and the excellent relations the country has with almost all its neighbours make it a very attractive destination for investment and a gateway for business development in the wider region. Cyprus, Georgiades underlined, can be a valuable partner for the US, both politically and economically.
Georgiades stressed that the resolution of the Cyprus problem remains our side's top priority. He also deplored Turkey's aggression and destabilizing role in the region and its departure from Western principles and values.
During the meeting, the breadth and potential of parliamentary diplomacy and the usefulness of exchanges between Cyprus and the United States in all fields were also emphasized.
