The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and Chairman of the Cyprus-Armenia Friendship Group in the House of Representatives, Mr. Harris Georgiades, had a meeting today with the Ambassador of Armenia to Cyprus, based in Athens, Mr. Tigran Mkrtchyan. Present at the meeting were the members of the Committee, MPs Mr. George Loukaidis and Mr. Chrisis Pantelidis, as well as the Representative of the Armenian Religious Group in the House of Representatives Mr. Vartkes Mahtesian.

The meeting reaffirmed the strong bonds of friendship that have long linked Cyprus and Armenia, as well as the common challenges that the two countries face due to the expansionist ambitions of Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Mr. Mkrtchyan expressed gratitude for the unreserved support, on a principled basis, of the Republic of Cyprus to Armenia's positions on Nagorno Karabakh. He also informed the Cypriot MPs about the current situation on the ground and the ongoing peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Armenian Ambassador reaffirmed his country's support for the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem as well as Armenia's commitment to its European perspective, while stressing the importance of cooperation and coordination with friendly member states of the European Union, such as Cyprus. In this context, Mr Georgiades underlined the importance of coordinating moves between the two countries, particularly at the parliamentary level, to raise awareness of the international community with regard to the national issues of Cyprus and Armenia. He reaffirmed the common will to further strengthen dialogue and cooperation, especially at the level of the parliaments of the two countries.
