The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs Mr.Harris Georgiades and the Members of the Committee Mr.Giorgos Loukaidis, Ms.Christiana Erotokritou, Mr.Chrisis Pantelidis and Ms. Alexandra Attalidou met today with the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Mr. Khaldoun Nawaf Ahmad Hina, in the framework of his official visit to Cyprus. Mr. Hina was accompanied by the Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to Cyprus, Mr. Basheer Zubi.
Welcoming Mr. Hina, Mr. Georgiades noted the important role that Jordan plays as a pillar of stability in the volatile region of the Middle East. He underlined that Cyprus also aims to be a factor of regional security and stability, due to the excellent relations it maintains with almost all countries in the region, with the exception of Turkey, which, he noted, does not seem to want to be included in the peace equation and whose behaviour undermines efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. Georgiades noted that on the basis of their constructive approach, Cyprus and Jordan can work together to promote peace, stability and mutual understanding for the benefit of the region and further develop cooperation between them in a wide range of areas of common interest, referring in particular to the importance of intensifying dialogue and exchanges at the parliamentary level. He assured his Jordanian counterpart that Cyprus is a reliable partner for Jordan in all areas and in its capacity as a Member State of the European Union (EU). They deplored the flagrant violations of international law and human rights by Turkey, as a consequence of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation, for fifty years, of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as Turkish aggression and expansionism against Cyprus, but also against other countries in the region and beyond. The Cypriot MPs praised the friendly relations between the peoples of Cyprus and Jordan and noted that there is ample room for further expansion of cooperation between the two countries in areas of common interest. The MEPs also underlined that Cyprus is providing all possible support to Jordan within the EU in order to recognise the particular challenges the country faces, notably the disproportionate number of refugees hosted on its territory, and to further increase the support provided by the EU.
The meeting also discussed issues of regional interest, in particular the situation in the Middle East. From the side of the Members of the Commission, the Cypriot initiative to establish a sea corridor for the dispatch of humanitarian aid to Gaza was noted and the crucial importance of maintaining the stability of Jordan for ensuring peace and stability of the whole region was emphasized in conclusion.
