In a ceremony held today at the "Theophilos Georgiades" Hall of the Press and Information Office (PIO) the donation of copies of the publication "Hellenic Cyprus" was made by the family of Georgios Levas to the PIO's Press Archive.

The delivery of the copies was carried out by the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Mr. George Papanastasiou, while the event was greeted by the Director of Press and Information Mrs. Aliki Stylianou, the Mayor of Neo Chorio Kythrea Mr. Christos Lambria and on behalf of the Levas family Mrs. Efthymia Christoforou Levas. The event was welcomed by the Head of the Domestic Press Department, Mrs. Constantia Sotiriou.

In her welcome address, the Director of the General Secretariat of the Press, Mrs. Aliki Stylianou, thanking the family of Georgios Levas for the kind donation of the collection "Greek Cyprus" to the Press Archive, stated that the General Secretariat of the Press assumes the obligation and responsibility for the digitization and making the collection available to the public through its Archive. Then, noting the completeness of the Newspaper Archive held by the CUT, he described the improvement of public access to the archives of announcements, newspapers, magazines, publications, films and photographs as an "important mission" of the CUT. Ms. Stylianou reiterated that the GSF is making efforts for the complete digitization of the Press Archive, being fully aware that the archives are unique and irreplaceable documents of cultural heritage and preservation of memory passed on from generation to generation.

For his part, the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, Mr. George Papanastasiou referred to the wish of Mrs. Euthymia Christoforou Levas to preserve, preserve, digitize and integrate the collection of the print media into the digital press archive of the CTI, thus contributing a historical part of the printed press of Cyprus to its archive. Mr. Papanastasiou then said: "Of particular importance to me, I must confess, is the fact that the donation of the collection is made in memory of its original owner, the late George Levas, my grandfather, from whom I take my name. George Levas, a primary school teacher from Neo Horio Kythrea, was an active man, with a deep love for letters, our land, our customs and traditions."

Mr. Lambria, who served for 30 years at the GMP, described the press as the most important source of information for scholars of the modern history of Cyprus during the period between the end of the 19th century and the mid-20th century, which lends to the immense importance of the Newspaper Archive. Then, describing how the "Greek Cyprus" collection came into the possession of Mrs. Euthymia Christoforou Levas and from there, today, to be handed over to the Press Archive of the General Secretariat of Information, Mr. Lambria expressed the view that it is a "treasure", a "rare source of information on perhaps the most decisive period of the modern history of Cyprus" that "has found its appropriate place, which will now constitute an important step for scholars and researchers".

On behalf of the family of Georgios Levas, Mrs. Efthymia Christoforou Levas thanked the GMP for receiving the collection and expressed her joy and emotion at handing over a publication that once expressed the sacred struggle of the Union, and which she herself preserved with a sense of protection. She expressed her conviction that its preservation, conservation and digitisation will contribute significantly to the further enhancement of the cultural heritage of the country, will remind us of the sacred and the sacred and will help so that the history of Cyprus and Hellenism can be heard.

At the end of the delivery of the collection, the short video film "In the beginning was the press" was shown.
