The Archaeological Museum of Larnaca District has reopened its doors to the public, following the completion of renovation works. In the two fully renovated wings of the Museum, the exhibits have a central role and enable the Museum's visitors to enjoy the journey through the history of Larnaca District.

The aim of the Museum's renovation works was to meet the need for a more modern way of exhibition. On the one hand, the renewal of the collection of exhibits is achieved with new findings that have come to light from excavations in recent decades and testify to the dynamism of the settlements that were founded and flourished in the Province from the 9th millennium BC and throughout the periods that followed until the emergence of the metropolis of Kition. On the other hand, it was imperative to modernize the exhibition in terms of museography, i.e. to make a new design, which would serve the narration of the history of the human societies of the Province in antiquity, in a simple and direct way, so that it would be understandable to the visitor.

The exhibits have now been enriched with texts, which have a scientific background, but are presented in simple language, with photographs, rich illustrations, maps and digital visual material. In addition to the chronological narrative, the objects are presented in thematic sections such as everyday life, personal adornment, administration and the various arts and crafts that developed over the centuries.

In his welcome address, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Yannis Karousos, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the work carried out on the Museum's premises. According to the Minister of Transport, by delivering yet another cultural project, which was announced by the President of the Republic and became a reality, "the Government is actively showing its intention to strengthen the sector, to promote and showcase the wealth of our country. I want to assure you of the political will of the President of the Republic himself to invest in the cultural sector, with projects and policies that highlight our pride in our cultural wealth and our history."

According to Mr. Karousos, "the Government aims to promote our museums as places of culture and quality entertainment. It is our conviction that every citizen, whether living in Cyprus or visiting it, should have easy access to the rich cultural heritage of our country."

As Mr. Karousos said, "today we are delivering to the public an upgraded museum, a museum that is a jewel for the City and the District of Larnaca, which will offer a complete museum experience to the visitor. It is now up to the authorities of Larnaca, the Municipality, the EBRD and all those involved, to showcase it in a way that will ensure increased attendance to it, since, in the framework of the "Museums for All" policy, admission to the Museum will be free."

Continuing, Mr. Minister referred to the initiative of the Ministry of Transport to implement the "Museums for All" policy which provides for free admission to the 12 Museums of the Department of Antiquities, including the renovated Larnaca Archaeological Museum, as well as the extension of their opening hours and the expansion of their operation on weekends. At the same time, it is ensured that the Museums have the infrastructure in place to facilitate access to the Museums for persons with disabilities (PWD). "In this way, we enable everyone to see Cyprus through a different perspective and better understand our History and Culture," he noted.

The event was held in the presence of MPs from Larnaca District, the Mayor of Larnaca, the Presidents of the EBRD and Larnaca Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other stakeholders of the District. The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works had the opportunity, together with the attendees, to tour the modern and renovated premises of the Museum.
