[PIO] The Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Federal Republic of Brazil presented his credentials

The new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Federal Republic of Brazil, Dr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, during an official ceremony held on 17 November 2023, at the Presidential Palace (Palácio Planalto), in Brasilia.

In the private meeting that followed with President Lula, Ambassador Filippou conveyed to President Lula the warm greetings of the President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Christodoulides. He also expressed the Government's commitment to further strengthen the already excellent relations between the two countries both at bilateral level and within the framework of the European Union and their cooperation within various international organizations. Philippou expressed the Republic of Cyprus' gratitude for Brazil's long-standing and valuable contribution to the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Cyprus, and referred to the challenges faced by Cyprus due to the continued illegal occupation of part of its territory by Turkey. In this context, he informed President Lula of President Christodoulides' initiative to resume negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

In his response, the Brazilian President returned President Christodoulides' warm greetings and wished for the peaceful reunification of Cyprus as soon as possible. President Lula also referred to the continuously developing bilateral relations between Cyprus and Brazil, noting in particular the progress already achieved in trade between the two countries. The President conveyed his Government's interest in further strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation, particularly in the areas of investment, green transition, tourism and shipping.
