The first meeting of the National Demographic and Family Policy Body for 2024 took place today under the chairmanship of the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr.
The aim of the SFSO is to monitor and record the current situation in Cyprus in its areas of interest and to define a coherent and integrated strategy for demographic development and policies related to the family.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministries of Finance, Justice and Public Order, Health, Education, Sports and Youth, Interior and the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare. Also participating were representatives of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities, the Union of Cyprus Communities, the Cyprus Federation of Employers and Industrialists, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Pancyprian Labour Federation, the Confederation of Cyprus Employees, the Pancyprian Organisation of Polychildren, the Pancyprian Organisation of Families of Five, the Cyprus Family Planning Association, the Pancyprian Coordinating Council for Volunteerism, the Association of Single Parent Families and Friends, the Pancyprian Confederation of Secondary School Parents' Associations, the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee for the Protection and Welfare of Children, the Cyprus Demographic and Migration Policy Institute and the Cyprus Citizen Elders' Organization.
In the framework of the meeting, the updated Action Plan of the EBDOP for the coming years was unanimously approved, which includes 29 actions promoted by the competent Ministries and services covering a wide range of issues related to the scope of the organization. It was also decided that planning for 2025 will begin immediately and a meeting will be held in February to improve the operation of the body.
During the meeting, reference was made to the Government's intention to assign an upgraded role to the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare for demographic and family policy issues while Labour Minister Yannis Panagiotou said: "The Government supports parents and children, supports families and strengthens the social fabric because the cohesion of society is a prerequisite for progress and prosperity. The family is a basic cell of society and by upgrading the quality of family life through targeted actions and holistic planning, we can contribute to tackling under-birth rate, increasing births and improving demographic data."
