From 06:00 on 14 August 2023 until 06:00 on 15 August 2023, the Fire Service responded to 26 calls for assistance (12 fires, 11 special services and 3 false calls).
At 10:41 a.m., a call was received for a fire in a store electrical panel within a shopping center in Larnaca County. Members of the Police and Fire Department from the Larnaca Fire Station of Lieutenant Andreas Papadopoulos responded. The security staff of the shopping centre had acted in accordance with the building's fire safety action plan and evacuated the building as a precaution before the arrival of the Fire Service. Attendees had been taken to a safe place in a timely manner without risk. Final extinguishing of the fire, which was confined to the electrical panel within the store, was carried out by members of the Fire Service using a dry powder fire extinguisher and ventilation using ventilation devices, as well as the building's ventilation system. The smoke affected the store in question, as well as a number of adjacent stores. After investigating the causes of the fire, in cooperation with the Police and the Electromechanical Service, the fire was caused by a short circuit.
At 13:47, a call was received for police assistance in locating two persons who had lost their bearings in an area between Kyprovasas and Vavatsinias. The EMAK responded with a team and a rescue vehicle. Two tourists, of Israeli origin, were heading in their vehicle in a wooded area and while they lost their orientation, they became immobilized in a rough and steep area. After they were found by the members of the EMAK and the Police and were in good health, they were transferred to a safe place for their return to their place of residence.
At 14:35, a call was received for the rescue of a young person, who was trapped in a gorge of about 500 meters in the Papoutsa area of the community of Paleochori. Members of the Police and Fire Service responded with a team and rescue vehicle from the Akropolis Fire Station Sergeant Spyros Tantanti, a special rescue team of the EMAK, as well as a vehicle from the Paleochori Rural Fire Station. The person in question was in the area on a motorcycle and after feeling unwell, he became trapped in the ravine without being able to return. The trapped person was approached by the members of the rescue team and after being given first aid by the members of the ambulance that was in the area, he was placed on a rescue stretcher and transferred by a Police helicopter to the Nicosia General Hospital, due to the rugged and steep area.
At 15:07, a call was received for a fire in the area near the bridge of Zygou of the community of Alassa in the Limassol district. Members of the Police and Fire Service from the Limassol Fire Stations responded with three fire engines and a portable fire-fighting unit. The fire burned half a hectare of dry grass and low wild vegetation and was brought under control at 18:11. The Fire Service was also supported by the Thera Service with a portable fire-fighting unit, and the Forestry Department with five fire engines and twenty-five working personnel. In addition, six fire trucks and three Forestry Department canoes were en route to the fire, and two fire trucks and thirty working personnel from the Forestry Department were also notified to be on standby in case they were needed. The ground forces were supported with water drops by the Republic's two chartered helicopters and three firefighting aircraft from the Forestry Department. The causes of the fire are being investigated, in cooperation with the police, as two outbreaks were found during the fire.
