The 70th Conference of the European Affairs Committees of the Parliaments of the Member States of the European Union (COSAC) continued today in Madrid. The House of Representatives was represented by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Mr. Harris Georgiades, and the member of the Committee, Mr. Chrisis Pantelidis.
In the context of the discussion on the situation in Ukraine and its relations with the European Union (EU), Mr. Pantelides said in his intervention that Cyprus stands by Ukraine and the Ukrainian people and, despite the consequences for itself, supports in every way the process of Ukraine's accession to the EU.
On the occasion of Russia's condemnable invasion of Ukraine, the Cypriot MEP expressed the view that this should be the occasion for the Union to focus more on strengthening the autonomy of the Union in all areas and on improving the EU's capacity to defend both its interests and those of its own citizens.
It also showed that the EU had in the past misjudged the aspirations of the authoritarian and expansionist model pursued by Russia and that it still has the same misjudgement towards the similar expansionist actions and revisionism pursued by Turkey and Azerbaijan.
Finally, he called on the EU to continue building partnerships with third countries to safeguard its interests, given that these countries share the same principles and values and have genuine respect for neighbouring states and their territorial integrity.
