The 5th International Conference "Literacy and Modern Society: Creativity, Equality, Social Action",[/URL], organised by the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, in collaboration with the University of Cyprus, at the "Filoxenia" Conference Centre, in Nicosia.
For the Conference, which continues tomorrow, Tuesday, 5 December 2023 and concludes on Wednesday, 6 December 2023, there is great interest from Cyprus, Greece, Europe and other countries. At the Conference, academics, teachers, students, researchers, representatives of organisations with a practical interest and involvement in language and literacy issues will present their relevant work through a number of papers, presentations, symposia and workshops.
The Conference began with a welcome address by the Deputy Director of the Pedagogical Institute, Ms. Elena Hadjikakou, who stated that this year's Conference, as a continuation of the previous ones, aims to inform about research and studies from a wide range of educational and pedagogical aspects, contributing to the actions for substantial and creative improvement of education and our society at large.
This was followed by a welcome address by the Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Tasos Christofides, who said that, through the Department of Education, they contributed to the organisation of the Conference again this year, recognising the importance of language and literacy in the development of individuals and the well-being of societies. Also, the Rector, commenting that the number of presentations at the Conference was impressive, noted that the University of Cyprus supports research and teaching in language and literacy and encourages related initiatives and actions.
The opening of the Conference was announced by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, underlining that the development of high literacy skills is essential for the qualitative improvement of life in Cyprus. At the same time, the President assured that the development of actions for language teaching and literacy education has been placed at the core of education. Mr Christodoulides, praising the importance of the Conference, since it has become an institution not only for Cyprus, but also internationally, stated that the results of the Conference's work will serve as a guide for the implementation of policies that will contribute to the further improvement of the education provided.
The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Ms Athena Michaelidou, in her presentation at the opening of the Conference, outlined the Ministry's vision for the promotion of a human-centred and quality school for all children and analysed the planning of educational actions and policies that are in line with the themes of the Conference. The aim of these policies and actions, as Ms Michailidou stressed, is the implementation of innovative solutions for radical reform and qualitative upgrading of our education system: https:/forms.office.com/e/n6zuGz5ds3) and at the Conference Secretariat, at the Filoxenia Conference Centre.
It is recalled that participation in the Conference is free of charge and certificates of participation will be issued to all participants attending any of the Conference sessions.
