The opening of the "20 YEARS OF CYPRUS - EU" Walking Photography Exhibition of the Press and Information Office (PIO) held in cooperation with the Nicosia Municipality took place tonight.
Starting from Lydini Street and ending at the Information and Training Centre for Employment and Entrepreneurship for Vulnerable Groups (KEEAED), the exhibition captures through 137 photographs from the photographic archive of the CTI the course of Cyprus' accession to the European Union (EU) and the 20 years of our country's participation in the EU.
The exhibition was inaugurated by the President of the Republic Mr. Nikos Christodoulides in the presence of the Director of the CTM Ms. Aliki Stylianou and personalities from the fields of politics, arts and letters.
Welcoming the guests, the Director of the Press and Information Office expressed her thanks to the President of the Republic for his very honourable presence, as well as to the Mayor of Nicosia for the facilities provided for the realisation of the exhibition. She also thanked the GMP staff who worked with zeal and dedication in order to create this original exhibition for all to enjoy.
In his greeting the President of the Republic thanked the Director Mrs. Aliki Stylianou and the staff of the Press and Information Office for today's event and for their valuable contribution to all the events organised for the 20th anniversary of Cyprus' accession to the EU, as well as the Mayor of Nicosia Mr. Constantinos Yiorkatzis for the facilities he has provided for today's event.
He stressed that our accession in 2004 to the European family is the most decisive development for our country since its foundation in 1960 and the culmination of a multi-year strategic pursuit, in a process in which all governments made painstaking and persistent efforts, always with the valuable assistance, cooperation and substantial support of the Hellenic Republic.
President Christodoulides noted that with today's exhibition and the accompanying anniversary album, we honour all those who envisioned, worked and work so that we and our children can enjoy the multiple benefits of our country's accession to the European Union. At the same time, he added, reviewing the past and the numerous challenges we face, we look to the future with optimism and confidence. Strength through unity is the element that should guide us and is the legacy that should determine our decisions, he stressed.
Referring to the Cyprus problem, the President of the Republic said that this is a predominantly European issue, and we are investing in the European Union for its final settlement, using all the political and economic means and tools at its disposal, including in the context of Euro-Turkish relations, so that all legal residents of Cyprus can fully enjoy their rights as European citizens in a reunited homeland.
The exhibition will last until 29 May 2024.

The publication accompanying the exhibition is adorned with seven original watercolours by artist Katerina Attalidou, depicting parts of the exhibition route.
