Joint Press Conference of the Minister of Interior and the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy
At a joint press conference of the Minister of Interior and the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy held on 27 June 2024, the ten new digital services of the Directorate of Civil Registry were presented, developed by the specialized Digital Services Factory team of the Ministry of State, based on a citizen-centric philosophy that puts the needs of the citizen at the heart of the whole process.
These are services that concern every citizen and are part of the broader framework of the Christodoulides Government's goal of digital modernization, simplification and facilitation of every interaction and transaction of the citizen with the State, ensuring better quality service to citizens and drastically reducing bureaucracy.
In the first phase of the digitisation project of the Population Registry services, which goes live from today, citizens can apply through the Gov.cy Portal for the re-issuance of birth and death certificates and consular birth and death certificates, apply for the issuance or renewal of identity cards and passports for adults, issue a permanent residence certificate and issue a certificate of origin for students. In addition to these services, citizens will henceforth be able to access the list of certificates issued and will be offered the possibility to confirm the validity of the certificates by the services where the documents will be deposited.
With the exception of the services for issuing and renewing identity cards and passports, which require a visit to one of the service points to obtain biometric data, the procedure for the other services is completed online, easily and quickly, The digital services are offered in the first stage in Greek, with the intention to soon be available in English.
According to the Minister of Interior Mr. Konstantinos Ioannou, this first set of services is only the beginning of the process of digitizing the services of the Civil Registry. After thanking the Undersecretariat for the good cooperation, he added that "our goal, with the help of the Undersecretariat of Research, is to move to the full digitization of the Civil Registry, so as to reduce service time and create a modern and citizen-friendly State, while at the same time contributing to the reduction of our environmental footprint."
In his turn, the Deputy Minister of Digital Policy, Mr. Nicodemus Damianou, referred to the importance that the Government attaches to the axis of digital transition, stating that these services constitute another step in the path towards the full digitalization of citizen services. "While simplifying procedures and applying modern, flexible methodologies that substantially improve the user experience, we accelerate the completion of every citizen's transaction with the State," the Deputy Minister said. "With targeted steps," he added, "we are building the Cypriot Digital Citizen and giving him the tools he needs to navigate easily and safely in the new digital environment."
During the press conference, an officer of the Civil Registry Department presented the application procedure for the issuance of birth certificates and identity cards.
