The Legislative Commissioner Ms Louisa Christodoulides-Zanettou sent on 4.12.2023 to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for submission to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Nations in Geneva, the 6th Periodic Report of the Republic of Cyprus in relation to the implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Forms of Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, an obligation arising from the Concluding Observations/Recommendations of the CAT Committee on the 5th Periodic Report of the Republic (paragraph 50 of the recommendations).
The 6th Periodic Report of the Republic of Cyprus prepared by the Commissioner for Legislation presents the progress achieved in the Republic during the period June 2018 - December 2023, as well as the measures taken by the Republic with regard to the criminalization of torture, the rights of persons arrested and detained, including political asylum seekers and irregular migrants, their conditions of detention and their rights of recourse to domestic remedies in the context of their deportation, the system
The report submitted by the Commissioner was contributed to by the Ministry of Justice and Public Order with input from the Police and the Department of Prisons, with substantial input from the Legal Service and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Labour and Social Security, Health, Defence, as well as the State Ministry of Social Welfare and the Commissioner for Administration. Input was also received from the Independent Authority for Allegations and Complaints against the Police.
The 6th Periodic Report of the Republic is submitted within the time frame set by the United Nations Committee of the same name, the deadline being 6 December 2023.
