It is important that the Republic of Cyprus has been invited to participate in the Peace Conference, as it is a recognition of its role in the region and of the excellent relations it maintains with all the states of the region, President of the Republic Mr. Nikos Christodoulides.
In his remarks to journalists, coming to an event in Chloraka, and asked what he expects from the International Peace Conference convened by the President of Egypt and to be held tomorrow in Cairo, President Christodoulides said: "It is a crucial Conference, considering the developments as we have been experiencing lately.
I should mention that it is important that the Republic of Cyprus has been invited, it is a recognition of our role in the region, the excellent relations we have with all the states in the region, and we hope that our presence, together with other states, of course, can lead to a positive outcome. And a positive outcome can only be that the situation does not deteriorate further, especially when we are talking about civilians.
You understand that any negative developments will make the situation even more difficult.
So, the objective of the Conference - I have also spoken with the Egyptian President - is to see how the facts are created, how the basis is created, so that an already difficult situation does not deteriorate.
So, I will go to Egypt tomorrow morning with the Foreign Minister, I will have bilateral contacts with other leaders who will be present, and I hope that some positive results will emerge.
Our region needs positive news, given all that is happening. I repeat, it is a very difficult situation, we are constantly informed about the developments and we hope the Conference will bring some results."
