The international community gave a clear response to Turkey with the Security Council Statement, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulides said tonight.
In his statements to journalists, while attending the Cypriots in Diaspora Conference at the University Campus, the President of the Republic, asked how the Government will proceed in managing the issue of Turkish provocations in Pyla, said: "The international community has given a clear response to both Mr Erdogan and the occupation regime and I need not say anything more."
It is important that there has been this unprecedented response from the international community. I keep the fact that they recognized our role, our constructive role, how we handled the whole issue and any actions taken by the occupation regime. We will continue to work for the resumption of talks, because only the resumption of talks will lead us to the end of this anomalous state of affairs, to the liberation, to the reunification of our country.
And I look forward to both the UN General Assembly and the European Council in October."
Asked to give his assessment of whether Erdogan's statements also herald new Turkish provocations, the President of the Republic said: "I repeat that the best answer to Mr Erdogan is not what I will say. The best answer was given by the UN Security Council, by the European Union, by the international community as a whole with this unprecedented reaction."
Certainly, at the same time, we are taking all the actions that need to be taken in order to prevent any new acts by Turkey, whether they concern the buffer zone or the occupied territories."
Certainly, at the same time, we are taking all the actions that need to be taken in order to prevent any new acts by Turkey, whether they concern the buffer zone or the occupied territories.
Asked if the reaction of the international community is an obstacle to what the Turkish regime is planning in the Pyla area, President Christodoulides said: "You have seen the massive reaction of the international community, you have seen the reactions of the EU, which is why I referred to the General Assembly and the October European Council, which are of course crucial both for the Cyprus problem and for any positive developments in EU-Turkey relations. We recognize very well how much he would like to see positive developments in Euro-Turkish affairs."
Asked if Turkish moves "blow up" efforts to resume talks, President Christodoulides said: "I do not rule out that some people in the occupied territories have taken such actions, because they knew about the reactions, they did not expect them to be to such an extent, precisely to achieve the objective you have mentioned, to 'torpedo' any efforts to resume talks."
Asked if a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has been arranged in New York, President Christodoulides said: "I am ready to meet Mr Tatar whenever he is ready. It is my repeated calls for a meeting. Whenever he feels he is ready." President Christodoulides added that he has not arranged a meeting with Mr. Tatar.
Asked if he is concerned that the Security Council statement does not condemn Turkey, President Christodoulides said: "We all know, this is not the first time we have seen a Security Council Statement, that Turkey's reaction to the Security Council Statement alone shows Turkey's guilt."
Asked about his upcoming meeting with Senator Menendez and Cyprus-US relations, the President said: "It is a fact that our relations in recent years have reached a level that never existed before. And with Senator Menendez we will discuss specific issues concerning our bilateral relations on the one hand, some developments that we want to see in the immediate future, which are currently underway, but also regional developments and in general the trilateral format with Greece and Israel, which I will have the pleasure of hosting in early September."
Asked if he is satisfied with the police operation today in Chloraka, the President of the Republic said: "I am absolutely satisfied that the implementation of yesterday's decisions has begun. I will make my assessment and make it public when this operation is completed. The decrees of the State, of the Government, must be implemented and the Police, as I mentioned to the Chief of Police yesterday, are here precisely to implement these decisions.
We have a big problem with the migration issue, there will be no, no tolerance. Of course we will meet our international obligations, but beyond that, you will see in the next few days several announcements that aim to prevent, to change this image that exists - especially among traffickers - that Cyprus is an attractive destination. I repeat, our international obligations for those in need are a given, I am not discussing it, but for all those who exploit the system to serve their own interests, their own agendas, the Republic of Cyprus is not hospitable."
